Since its inception in 2009, the Berkeley Film Foundation (BFF) has become an essential lifeline for the local community of professional and emerging filmmakers. A successful private-nonprofit venture that funds both production and film education and helps advocate for local artists, BFF has awarded 150 grants totaling $1.7 million for films in production, postproduction, and distribution stages. The foundation has been instrumental in supporting films across a diverse range of styles, many of which have gone on to be screened widely across the country and around the world. While the selection we present here is just the tip of the iceberg, it demonstrates the high level of social commitment, historical research, and formal innovation that East Bay filmmakers are engaged in. The series includes two free presentations on BAMPFA’s iconic outdoor screen, September 12 and October 10. Bring lawn chairs and blankets and join us in celebration of BFF’s tenth anniversary.
